In this study, a multiobjective optimization (MOO) approach was utilized for effective decision-making when several variables were changing simultaneously during frying. Carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC), xanthan gum, and carrageenan coatings in different concentrations (0.25-1.50%, w/v) were applied on fish strips to reduce the oil uptake and protein oxidation during frying. The pickup of the strips increased significantly (p < 0.05) with increasing concentration. The CMC was effective in oil uptake reduction and protein oxidation, as revealed by the lower carbonyl and sulfhydryl contents in the fried strip. The hardness and chewiness of the coated fish strips were found to be declined significantly (p < 0.05) with increasing coating concentrations. The moisture, lipid, toughness, hardness, cutting force, oiliness, sulfhydryl content (all min), oil uptake reduction, and carbonyl content (both max) were considered as multiple criteria for the MOO technique, and fried strips coated with 1% CMC, followed by 0.75% xanthan gum and 0.75% carrageenan, emerged as the best optimal coating.

The current study investigates the potential utilization of poultry intestines for the synthesis of stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their impact on fish physiology. The AgNPs were synthesized and characterized using various analytical techniques. The toxicity of AgNPs on Anabas testudineus was evaluated, determining a 96-h LC50 value of 25.46 mg l-1. Subsequently, fish were exposed to concentrations corresponding to 1/10th, 1/25th, 1/50th, and 1/100th of the estimated LC50 for a duration of 60 days in a sub-acute study. A comprehensive range of biomarkers, including haematological, serum, oxidative stress, and metabolizing markers, were analyzed to assess the physiological responses of the fish. Additionally, histopathological examinations were conducted, and the accumulation of silver in biomarker organs was measured. The results indicate that silver tends to bioaccumulate in all biomarker organs in a dose- and time-dependent manner, except for the muscle tissue, where accumulation initially increased and subsequently decreased, demonstrating the fish's inherent ability for natural attenuation. Analysis of physiological data and integrated biomarker responses reveal that concentrations of 1/10th, 1/25th, and 1/50th of the LC50 can induce stress in the fish, while exposure to 1/100th of the LC50 shows minimal to no stress response. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the toxicity and physiological responses of fish exposed to poultry waste biosynthesized AgNPs, offering potential applications in aquaculture while harnessing their unique features.

This study investigated the diet composition and microplastic contamination in six fish species collected from the creek area of northeastern Arabian Sea. The results show that the diet of the fish is mainly composed of shrimps, algae, fish, and zooplankton, with microplastics constituting up to 4.83 % (Index of Preponderance) of their diet. The average abundance of microplastics ranges from 5.82 to 7.69 items per fish, and their ingestion is influenced by seasonal variation, gut fullness, and trophic level. Microplastic contamination has no significant effect on the condition factor and hepatosomatic index of the fish species. However, polymer hazard index indicates that microplastic pollution in fish is associated with a low to high risk factor, which might cause potential harm to aquatic lives and higher vertebrates via food chain. Therefore, this study highlights the need for immediate attention and effective regulations to reduce microplastic pollution to protect marine life.

To examine the spectrum of selenium toxicity between hardy and less hardy species of the same life stages, short-term and longer-term exposures in juvenile air-breathing fish Channa punctata (Bloch, 1973) and non-air-breathing fish Ctenopharyngodon idella (Cuvier, 1844) were assessed. Acute exposures revealed a greater 96-h median lethal concentration (LC50) for C. punctata (14.67 mg/l) compared to C. idella (7.98 mg/l). During their chronic exposure, both fishes' hemoglobin content (Hb), red blood cells (RBC), and hematocrit (HCT) markedly decreased (p < 0.05), although their clotting time (CT) significantly increased. At 96 h, immune-modulation was observed where total protein and serum globulin levels in both fishes considerably decreased (p < 0.05) compared to the first exposure at 0 days, although total glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, and albumin levels in both fishes significantly increased (p < 0.05) at 30 days. The lower cholesterol levels in C. punctata compared to C. idella are suggestive of a disrupted cholesterol transformation pathway. The greater total protein, triglyceride, albumin, and globulin levels in C. punctata compared to C. idella are suggestive of a comparatively robust immune capacity. In essence, selenium toxicity in the wild could manifest as disrupted metabolic pathways and downregulated immune capacity for less hardy species. In general, both fish species displayed significant alterations in their hematological and biochemical responses with increased exposure duration and elevated toxicant concentrations. This comparative investigation could improve the knowledge-spectrum of selenium toxicity in the wild as well as an understanding of secondary stress responses critically evident in hematological and biochemical parameters.

The acute toxicity of mercury to the air-breathing fish Clarias batrachus (Linn.) was determined in this study using hematological (including hemoglobin, hematocrit, total erythrocyte count, total leukocyte count, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) and biochemical (including total serum protein, serum glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, albumin) biomarkers at predetermined exposure concentrations (0.069 and 0.139 mg/L). Although significant differences were observed between exposure groups for all hematological and biochemical variables, a distinctive reduction in hemoglobin levels, hematocrit, and total erythrocyte count in the mercury-exposed fish compared to the control was observed from 24 h-96 h. Similarly, marked differences in serum globulin, total serum protein and cholesterol levels were observed across exposure groups from 24 h-96 h. While the marked hematological responses strongly suggestive of toxicant-related anemia, the marked biochemical responses suggest immune-modulation and metabolic disruption. The magnitude of toxic effects under graded toxicant exposures for weighted scores of combined biomarker response index (IBR) indicated an approximately 3-fold deterioration in overall health of mercury-exposed fish compared to control group. Depictions of hematological and biochemical effects in hardy species like Clarias batrachus indicate an imminent onset of anemia, immune-modulation and metabolic disruption within 24hs of exposure to inorganic mercury. Such observations for portends greater deleterious effects to less hardy aquatic biota under acute inorganic mercury environmental exposures.

The hydrophilic nature and resultant persistence of neonicotinoids in aquatic systems increase the exposure duration for non-target organisms. The sublethal toxicity of the neonicotinoid Thiamethoxam® spanning sub-chronic and chronic durations was investigated in Clarias batrachus, a non-target freshwater fish species. 96 h LC50 value of Thiamethoxam® on Clarias batrachus was 138.60 mg L-1. Pre-determined exposure concentrations of Thiamethoxam® (6.93 and 13.86 mg L-1) were used and effects were assessed at days 15, 30, and 45 exposure intervals. Biomarker effects were evaluated using antioxidant enzyme responses (CAT, SOD) neurotransmission (acetylcholinesterase activity), haematological and serum biochemistry changes (including haemoglobin content, total erythrocyte count, and serum albumin total leukocyte count, total serum protein, serum globulin, triglyceride, cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, very low-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, phospholipid, and total serum glucose), histopathological alterations (gill and liver). Thiamethoxam®-exposed fish showed a marked reduction in haemoglobin content, total erythrocyte count, and serum albumin levels compared to control fish. Similarly, gill and liver antioxidant enzyme activity (CAT, SOD) and neurotransmission (acetylcholinesterase) also showed altered responses between sub-chronic exposure on day-15 and chronic responses on day-45. Histopathological observations in gill tissue revealed alterations ranging from vacuolation, hypertrophy, disruption of primary lamellar architecture, haemorrhage, the fusion of secondary lamella, and sloughing of outer epithelia. For liver tissue of exposed fish histopathological observations included increased sinusoidal spaces (ISS), necrosis of hepatocytes (NOH), nuclear degeneration (ND), disruption of architecture (DOA), macrophage infiltration of the central vein, vacuolation (V), hypertrophied hepatocytes, and haemorrhages. The gradients of toxic responses across exposure concentrations and depictions of impaired fish health with increasing thiamethoxam® exposure duration portend lowered physiological capacity for survival in the wild.

The sub-lethal toxicity of Captan® on selected haematological (Hemoglobin, Haematocrit, Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin) growth (Condition factor, Hepatosomatic Index, Specific Growth Rate), biochemical (serum glucose, protein), and endocrine parameters (growth hormone, T3 and T4) in Clarias batrachus was examined under chronic exposures. Captan® was administered at predetermined exposure concentrations (0.53 and 1.06 mg/L) and monitored on days 15, 30, and 45 of the experimental periods. The experimental groups showed significantly lower values (p < 0.05) of haemoglobin content, hematocrit, MCH in Captan® exposed fish compared to control. Serum protein, k-factor and SGR were significantly lower in exposed fish. Endocrine responses (T3 and T4) emerged as the most sensitive biomarker category, depicting modulated responses between sub-chronic exposure at day-15 and chronic responses at day-45. In general, biomarker depictions indicate that Captan® exposures are capable of inducing stress-specific effects at the biochemical and physiological levels negatively impacting the overall health and longevity of such animals.

There is limited information on fluoride toxicity and risk overview on ecotoxicological risks to aquatic invertebrate populations particularly molluscan taxa. This necessitated the assessment of toxicity responses in the freshwater snail, Bellamya bengalensis exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of sodium fluoride. Under lethal exposures (150, 200, 250, 300, 400 and 450 mg/l), the median lethal concentrations (LC50) were determined to be 422.36, 347.10, 333.33 and 273.24 mg/l for B. bengalensis at 24, 48, 72 and 96 h respectively. The rate of mortality of the snails was increased significantly with elevated concentrations of the toxicant. The magnitude of toxicity i.e., toxicity factor at different time scale was also higher with increased exposure duration. Altered behavioural changes i.e., crawling movement, tentacle movement, clumping tendency, touch reflex and mucous secretion in exposed snail with elevated concentrations and exposure duration. Similarly, oxygen consumption rate of the treated snail also lowered significantly during 72 and 96 h of exposure. Under 30-day chronic exposures (Control-0.00 mg/L; T1-27.324 mg/L; T2-54.648 mg/L), protein concentrations in gonad and hepatopancreas of exposure groups was significantly lowered. Chronic exposures also revealed lowered haemocytes counts in exposure groups. The potential for loss of coordination, respiratory distress and physiological disruption in organisms exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of fluoride was demonstrated by this study. The estimation and magnitude of toxicity responses are necessary for a more accurate estimation of ecological risks to molluscan taxa and invertebrate populations under acute and chronic fluoride exposures in the wild.

The widespread occurrence of Mercury (Hg) and its derivatives in the aquatic environment and risks to the health of local populations has necessitated investigations into its toxic effects on sessile species. The toxicity of Mercury was observed sequentially from 96 h acute exposure regime (behavioural endpoints) to chronic durations (haematological and biochemical toxicity endpoints) in Bellamya bengalensis. Time-dependent lethal endpoints for acute toxicity (LC50) of mercury i.e., 24,48,72 and 96 h were estimated as 0.94, 0.88, 0.69 and 0.40 mg/l respectively. Threshold effect values i.e., LOEC (Lowest Observed Effect Concentration), NOEC (No Observed Effect Concentration) and MATC (Maximum Acceptable Toxicant Concentration) at 96 h were found to be 0.10, 0.05, 0.039 mg/l respectively. The study of oxygen consumption rate and behavioural changes during acute toxicity and haematological and biochemical responses during chronic toxicity to sublethal concentrations (10% and 20% of 96 h LC50) of mercury to the snail were also conducted. The organisms showed initial elevation at 24 h but later gradual decrease in oxygen consumption rate with the increase of concentration of mercury and time of exposure. For behavioural studies, variable test concentrations from 0.00 to 1.00 mg/l were used for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. The crawling activity and clumping tendency decreased with the progress of time at all treatment periods and stopped ultimately at 96 h of exposure from 0.7 mg/l onwards whereas touch reflex was not observed at 96 h exposure at all treatments except at 0.09 mg/l. In haemocyte count, no significant variation was observed among control values between various exposure periods (p > 0.05) though variations were observed in sub-lethal concentrations versus control at all treatment duration (7, 14, 21, 28d, p < 0.05). In biochemical response study, the protein content in hepatopancreas of the snails treated at sublethal concentrations of mercury (10% and 20% of 96 h LC50) reduced significantly versus control after 21d of exposure (p < 0.05). In gonads, the protein content of the treated snails significantly reduced at all treatment concentrations versus control at all exposure times (p < 0.05). Based on the safe levels indicated above, the concentration of 0.01 to 0.04 ppm of mercury can be considered safe for Bellamya bengalensis and any less-hardy aquatic species. These responses elicited by our molluscan model will not only help in biomonitoring of environmental mercury contamination in water bodies but will also provide support to ecological health and risk assessment.

In recent times, carbamazepine (CBZ) as an anticonvulsants drug has raised attention because of its safety concern in the aquatic environment. The present study aimed to evaluate the sub-lethal effects of CBZ (1%, 0.1 % and 0.01 % of 96 h LC50) on P. hypophthalmus for 60 days based on haematological, biochemical, and genotoxicity biomarkers. Chronic exposure of CBZ altered blood profiles (total erythrocyte count, packed cell volume, haemoglobin) and serum biomarkers such as alkaline phosphates, cholesterol, lactate dehydrogenase and transaminase enzymes. Oxidative stress biomarkers such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity were also substantially affected in all treatments. Genotoxicity study revealed the formation of micronucleus in erythrocytes of exposed fish. Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR) study showed cholesterol, serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) in serum and SOD, CAT in liver tissue are the best organ-based enzyme biomarkers. The present report concludes that an environmentally realistic concentration of CBZ can pose a serious threat to aquatic organisms.

Transportation of fish seed is a complex phenomenon associated with multiple kinds of stressors that simultaneously affect the fish in a confined environment, causing stress and mortality. The present study investigated the stress-relieving effect of exogenous glucose as a water additive in different concentrations (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4%) during simulated transportation (12 h) of L. rohita fingerlings. The integrated biomarker response (IBR) index is a holistic tool to determine the optimum dose of exogenous glucose for mitigating transportation stress in fish. Based on selected biomarkers related to the stress hormone, serum biochemistry, oxidative stress, and HSP70 mRNA expression, the IBR index is calculated for each treatment and control group. The result showed a significant change in the level of stress hormone cortisol, enzymes (SGPT, LDH, MDH, SOD, CAT) and metabolites (serum glucose, triglyceride, creatinine) along with an upregulation in liver HSP70 mRNA expression. IBR index suggests that 0.2% glucose exhibited the lowest multi-biomarker stress response in comparison to other treatments and control. Therefore, the use of 0.2% glucose as a water additive will provide a solution to transportation induced stress in L. rohita fingerling and will underwrite the success of grow-out fish culture in days to come.

Application of biomarkers is an effective approach for a better understanding of varying toxicity in aquatic organisms during the seasonal and diurnal changes in the natural environment. This report describes the toxicity of sub-lethal concentrations of triclosan (TCS) at different pH (6.5, 7.5 and 8.5) based on selected biomarkers related to oxidative stress, metabolism and genotoxicity in Pangasianodon hypophthalmus. The 96 h LC50 of TCS for P. hypophthalmus was lower at pH 6.5 when compared to higher pH. The sub-lethal concentration of TCS exhibited a significant decrease in hematological parameters related to complete blood counts except for total leukocyte count (TLC), mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and red cell distribution width (RDW). Multivariate data analysis showed a significant interaction of TCS and pH in metabolizing enzymes like glutamic oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione-s-transferase (GST) and neurotransmitter enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE). A significant increase in DNA damage and micronuclei frequency in liver and blood cells of TCS exposed fish at pH 6.5 indicate that the TCS exposure has pronounced effects on genetic materials. The findings of present study establish that enzymes like SOD, LDH, GOT, AChE, DNA damage and micronuclei frequency can be successfully deployed as biomarkers for the assessment of toxicity of TCS in fish.

AIM: Dairy cattle health monitoring program becomes vital for detecting the febrile conditions to prevent the outbreak of the animal diseases as well as ensuring the fitness of the animals that are directly affecting the health of the consumers. The aim of this study was to validate real-time rectal temperature (RT) data of radio frequency based digital (RFD) thermometer with RT data of mercury bulb (MB) thermometer in dairy cattle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two experiments were conducted. In experiment I, six female Jersey crossbred cattle with a mean (±standard error of the mean) body weight of 534.83±13.90 kg at the age of 12±0.52 years were used to record RT for 2 h on empty stomach and 2 h after feeding at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 min using a RFD thermometer as well as a MB thermometer. In experiment II, six female Jersey crossbred cattle were further used to record RT for 2 h before exercise and 2 h after exercise at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 min. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance with post hoc comparisons by Bonferroni test was done. RESULTS: Real-time RT data recorded by RFD thermometer as well as MB thermometer did not differ (p>0.05) before and after feeding/exercise. An increase (p<0.05) in RT after feeding/exercise in experimental crossbred cattle was recorded by both RFD thermometer and MB thermometer. CONCLUSION: The results obtained in the present study suggest that the body temperature recordings from RFD thermometer would be acceptable and thus RFD thermometer could work well for monitoring real-time RT in cattle.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of biofloc-based aquaculture system on inorganic nitrogen control, and growth and immunological responses of rohu (Labeo rohita). Fingerlings of rohu were cultured in indoor biofloc tanks in light-limited condition for 16 weeks with daily addition of molasses as carbon source to maintain the C/N ratio at 15. Different water quality parameters were measured at weekly interval. Growth, survival and welfare indices including stress and immunological status were measured after the end of the experimental period. Factor analysis using water quality variables indicated ammonia immobilization by heterotrophic bacteria, rather than nitrification, as the dominant mechanism influencing ammonia removal in the biofloc system. Ammonia immobilization was concomitant with microbial biomass production, as also revealed through factor analysis. The biofloc culture system enhanced the growth of rohu significantly than the control fish. As a measure of stress, the serum glucose content did not differ significantly between the fish cultured in biofloc and control system. Among the immunological parameters, respiratory burst and alkaline phosphatase activity showed significant enhancement in fish grown in biofloc system than the control. However, myeloperoxidase activity and total serum protein content did not show any statistically significant difference between biofloc and control system. The enhanced growth and welfare of the cultured fish may be attributed to in situ maintenance of water quality within the biofloc system and presence of microbial floc.

The effects of water pH on life history parameters of Bosmina tripurae have been studied to determine the most suitable water pH desired for the maximum growth and development of this newly discovered cladoceran species. The study was carried out under the laboratory condition at 20 ± 2°C. Five pH ranges 5.0 ± 0.2, 6.0 ± 0.2, 7.0 ± 0.2, 8.0 ± 0.2 and 9.0 ± 0.2 with six replicates for each pH consisting of one animal in each Petri dish (80 × 15 mm) were used for the study. 20 mL of respective test medium was maintained with Chlorella sp. (2 × 104 ± 0.03 cells mL-1) in each Petri dish throughout the experiment. Thirty (30) animals were observed daily to investigate different life history parameters like total life span, age at maturity, number of eggs, neonates and egg batches etc. at different condition. From the study it was found that acidic water (pH 5 ± 0.2) is more suitable for the culture of Bosmina tripurae in laboratory condition.

In the present study, we investigated the in vitro immunostimulatory effects of inactivated form of two potential probiotics, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FPTB16 and B. subtilis FPTB13 in catla (Catla catla). Catla head kidney leukocytes (HK) were incubated with the bacteria alive or inactivated with heat shock (2 h at 60 °C), UV light (for 2.5 h) and formalin (1.0%, v/v) treatment (for 24 h at 4 °C) at different concentrations (10(7), 10(8) and 10(9) cells ml(-1)). After incubation, different cellular immune parameters such as respiratory burst activity, nitric oxide production, leukocyte peroxidase content and proliferative response were analyzed. The inactivated probiotic preparations stimulated all the cellular immune parameters of catla HK leukocytes in vitro. Among the different inactivated preparations, heat-treated form exhibited the best result. The lowest dose (10(7) cells ml(-1)) of both the strains showed the maximum stimulation. The results collectively suggest the efficacy of inactivated preparations to be used as immunostimulant in aquaculture.

Data on age and body weight at breeding, parity, previous litter size, days open and some descriptive body linear traits from 389 meat-type, prolific Black Bengal goats in Tripura State of India, were collected for 3 and 1/2 years (2007 to 2010) and analyzed using logistic regression model. The objectives of the study were i) to evaluate the effect of age and body weight at breeding, parity, previous litter size and days open on litter size of does; and ii) to investigate if body linear type traits influenced litter size in meat-type, prolific goats. The incidence of 68.39% multiple births with a prolificacy rate of 175.07% was recorded. Higher age (>2.69 year), higher parity order (>2.31), more body weight at breeding (>20.5 kg) and larger previous litter size (>1.65) showed an increase likelihood of multiple litter size when compared to single litter size. There was a strong, positive relationship between litter size and various body linear type traits like neck length (>22.78 cm), body length (>54.86 cm), withers height (>48.85 cm), croup height (>50.67 cm), distance between tuber coxae bones (>11.38 cm) and distance between tuber ischii bones (>4.56 cm) for discriminating the goats bearing multiple fetuses from those bearing a single fetus.
